A Bunraku puppet — ningyō — from Japan's greatest puppet theater tradition, developed in Osaka over three centuries into a performance art of extraordinary sophistication. Bunraku puppets are operated by three visible puppeteers working in coordinated silence, their heads, hands, and movements creating an illusion of autonomous life that rivals human performance in emotional expressiveness. Sadanobu III's depiction of the Bunraku puppet captures the puppet in the specific costume and posture of a dramatic role, the elaborate wig and painted face conveying character type.
