MAIKO (Spring)

The spring edition of Sadanobu III's maiko series places an apprentice geiko figure within the visual vocabulary of the season — likely incorporating cherry blossoms, soft pink or pale green tones, and the light layering of kimono appropriate to warming weather. Spring was the dominant season for bijin-ga imagery, associated with renewal and the opening of the outdoor tea ceremony and hanami season in which maiko from Gion and Pontocho participated publicly. The figure's kimono would carry seasonal motifs woven or printed into the fabric, requiring careful registration of multiple color blocks. The series format — presenting the same subject across four seasonal variants — follows a convention established in nishiki-e print culture and allows comparison of both artistic handling and seasonal symbolism.
