Description

This impression of Onsen Yado (Hot Springs Inn) is identified as a posthumous edition published circa 1922 by Taguchi Kitsumatsu, printed from Goyo's original blocks after his death in February 1921. Posthumous editions from the same woodblocks allow comparison with lifetime impressions: the blocks may show minor wear, the inking may differ from Goyo's personal supervision, and the paper selection may not match his exacting standards. Taguchi Kitsumatsu's involvement indicates that the blocks passed to a publisher who recognized their commercial value and issued additional printings to meet demand for Goyo's work in the years immediately following his death. Collectors and curators distinguish posthumous from lifetime impressions through subtle differences in impression depth, color saturation, and the condition of fine carved lines. The composition itself dates to 1920, placing it among Goyo's final group of completed designs.
