Description
A second harbor composition, presenting the Kobe port from a different vantage or in a different season than the companion print of the same subject. Kawanishi returned to the waterfront repeatedly across his career, and the body of harbor prints functions almost as a serial study, with each sheet recording a particular angle, weather, or moment of activity. The view here is likely taken from one of the elevated points along the foothills above the city, giving a panoramic sweep that takes in piers, quay buildings, and the ships of the bay. Color is the principal compositional tool: flat, saturated blues for water and sky set against ochre, terracotta, and grey for the built structures, with the keyblock providing only the necessary outlines. The print belongs to the regional [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition of artists rooting their practice in a single home city.
