$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Circus No. 6 (1968) incorporates mica into the ink and color on paper, the metallic particles creating a shimmering, theatrical surface entirely appropriate to a subject defined by spectacle, artifice, and the deliberate dazzlement of the audience. The circus series, which Hagiwara developed through the late 1960s, used the big top's world of trained bodies, sequined costumes, and spotlit arenas as a vehicle for his investigation of human physical capability pushed to its limits. The mica's glitter within the print surface was itself a kind of circus effect.
