$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Fantasy after Rain (1981–86) captures the peculiar quality of perception that follows heavy rainfall — the air washed clean and unusually transparent, colors intensified, the landscape temporarily made strange by its own freshness. Hagiwara's "fantasy" title signals that this is as much an imagined landscape as an observed one, the post-rain atmospheric conditions producing a world that seems slightly unreal in its clarity. The raindrop surfaces and the saturated greens and blues of the washed landscape provided his carved block with textural subjects of unusual richness.
