Kaizu Osaki — 海津大崎の — is the renowned cherry-blossom headland on Lake Biwa's northeastern shore, where several hundred cherry trees along a four-kilometer stretch of the lake shore created one of Japan's most spectacular spring spectacles. Hagiwara's treatment renders the cherry trees in bloom along the lakeside, their blossoms reflected in the still water below in a composition that combined the Japanese love of cherry viewing with the reflective surface that Lake Biwa's calm enabled. The Japanese characters in the title ground the image in specific topographic and cultural context.
