Description
A small pond — intimate in scale, its surface covered with reflections or aquatic plants — becomes in Hagiwara's sosaku-hanga treatment a meditative surface study. The pond's still water and the textures of its margins — mud, stone, aquatic vegetation — provided the artist with the kind of close-up natural subject that allowed his carved surface technique to operate at its most tactile. The "little" in the title signals the deliberate modesty of the subject, Hagiwara finding in the small and overlooked a field of investigation as rich as the grand and famous.
