$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Mask (14) belongs to Hagiwara's extended investigation of the mask as both object and concept — the theatrical face that conceals another face, the ritual mask that transforms the wearer's identity, the social mask that mediates between the individual and the world. The numbered series indicates sustained investigation across many works, each finding a different formal solution to the problem of rendering the mask's double nature: surface and concealment simultaneously. Hagiwara's carved woodblock technique, which worked by removal and revelation, was an ideal medium for the mask series' conceptual concerns.
