Description
*Midnight* (1959) is an abstract woodblock print by Hideo Hagiwara in a dark palette of charcoal grey, black, and deep brown, dominated by a vertical band of streaky yellow lines just left of center. Overlapping rectangular and grid-like forms in white, grey, and faint brown are layered across the composition, with a horizontal white-and-grey striated block crossing the lower left. The overall effect is somber and textured, built from irregular, hand-worked patches rather than a legible scene or figures.
