$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$2,000. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
The Red Lantern Shop — its paper lanterns glowing crimson above the street, their warm light transforming the facade into an abstract pattern of color and shadow — was one of Hagiwara's forays into the documentary urban subject. The lantern shop's commercial and festive character contrasts with the abstract and spiritual concerns of most of his work, but Hagiwara finds in the glowing lanterns the same investigation of light-through-surface that drives his more purely abstract compositions. The red lanterns, like his print surfaces, were objects whose beauty depended on the transmission of light.
