Description
This spring variant of the Arashiyama subject focuses the compositional emphasis on cherry blossoms — the defining feature of the site during hanami season in April — rather than the autumnal maple color that characterizes many Arashiyama images. The pale pink of the [sakura](/glossary/sakura) against the Oi River and the wooded hillsides offered Yoshida a full-register tonal challenge: soft floral pinks in the upper registers, reflective water below, and the structural anchor of the Togetsu-kyo bridge mediating between sky and river. Yoshida would print the blossom areas through carefully cut blocks that suggest the aggregated mass of individual flowers without rendering each separately, relying on the cumulative texture of carving on the key block to evoke petals in motion. Spring cherry prints held strong commercial appeal in the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) market both domestically and among Western collectors, and the Arashiyama subject combined Japan's most celebrated seasonal phenomenon with one of its most famous scenic locations, making this among the most culturally resonant subjects in Yoshida's repertoire.
