Castle subjects by Yoshida appeal to collectors of both Japanese architecture and landscape prints. Himeji Castle, as Japan's most celebrated surviving original castle, carries the highest premiums in this category. Evening and seasonal variants (snow, cherry blossoms) command further premium over standard daytime views. Studio prints of Himeji were listed at approximately $1,245 on 1stDibs for non-jizuri examples.
Himeji Castle — designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Japan's finest surviving example of early Edo-period castle architecture — is captured here in evening light, the "White Heron Castle" glowing against a darkening sky. The c. 1926 date and Taisho-period attribution place this at the very beginning of Yoshida's main [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) period. The castle's complex, multi-roofed keep system and gleaming white plaster walls presented one of the most photographically familiar architectural subjects in Japan, which Yoshida renders with his own interpretive light.
