Description
Hirosaki Castle in Aomori Prefecture is celebrated primarily for its springtime cherry blossom park, one of the most visited in northern Japan. This third variant of the subject may record a distinct seasonal or lighting condition from the companion compositions — possibly a morning view, a different angle on the three-story keep, or a focus on the castle's reflection in the moat that surrounds it. Yoshida visited Tohoku subjects to document landscapes distinct from the more commonly depicted scenery of central Honshu. The small keep, reconstructed in 1810 after the original burned, sits above stone walls and is typically framed by cherry trees in Yoshida's spring treatments. Careful gradation work in the sky and water passages, combined with precise keyblock rendering of the castle's white walls and tile roof, characterizes this architecturally precise composition.
