The jagged peak of the Matterhorn rises pale blue-white against a deep blue sky with billowing clouds at its base, while below it a dark, snow-dusted alpine village clusters in shadow along a slope, its church steeple and rows of chalet roofs picked out with small glowing yellow windows. The palette contrasts the cool blues and blacks of the mountain and night sky with the warm lamplight of the houses, creating a quiet, nocturnal mood.
