Description
Titled simply "May," this print almost certainly captures the height of Japan's late-spring transition, when cherry blossoms have given way to fresh green foliage. Yoshida frequently used seasonal titles to orient the viewer temporally rather than geographically, allowing the quality of light — the particular luminance of May in temperate Japan — to carry the composition. The palette would likely draw on pale greens, diffuse sky tones, and the soft gradations achievable through bokashi on dampened washi. Whether depicting a garden, a hillside, or a body of water, the print reflects Yoshida's integration of Western plein-air observation with the formal economy of woodblock printmaking, requiring multiple keyblock impressions from hand-carved blocks pressed with a baren.
