Description
The second afternoon state within the sailing boats series introduces a variation — likely in sky coloring, cloud formation, or water tone — from the primary afternoon print. In the context of Yoshida's methodical series production, such variants were not incidental but deliberate, each produced under his supervision with specific adjustments to the printing sequence or pigment application. A slightly more overcast sky, a different angle of light, or a variation in how the water surface reflects the sails would distinguish this state from its siblings. Printed on dampened washi using water-based pigments applied with a baren, the gradations in such afternoon skies required precise timing and pressure calibration from the printer. Collectors of Yoshida's work have long catalogued these variants as distinct objects, each representing a specific moment in his exploration of maritime light.
