Description

Among Yoshida's most technically refined works, the evening sailing boats composition places traditional wooden-hulled vessels on still water as the sun descends toward the horizon. The primary evening state would establish the tonal key for the series, with the sky rendered in gradated horizontal bands of warm and cool color. Sails — either furled or set — create vertical elements that interrupt the horizontal register of water and sky, while hull reflections articulate the flatness of the water surface. The shin-hanga production method, in which Yoshida directed specialist carvers and printers working on dampened washi, allowed for the precise registration and pigment layering that these atmospheric transitions required. This composition demonstrates how Yoshida adapted the Western plein-air tradition of capturing transient light conditions to the constraints and possibilities of the woodblock medium.
