Udaipur Castle belongs to Yoshida's 32-print India and Southeast Asia series from his 1930–1931 travels. The Palace of Udaipur (a closely related composition) sold for $3,350 at SEUYCO. India series prints carry a consistent 50–100% premium over comparable Japanese subjects, driven by their exotic rarity and Yoshida's masterful rendering of Mughal architecture.
- Jizuri (artist-supervised) seal: $2,000–$6,000
- Studio/posthumous edition: $600–$1,800
Description
The City Palace of Udaipur rises directly from the shores of Lake Pichola, its white marble and pale sandstone facades doubling in the lake's reflection — a composition of almost impossible pictorial beauty. Yoshida's 1931 print translates this visual spectacle into the woodblock medium with his characteristic attention to light on architectural surfaces and the delicate rendering of water reflections. Udaipur's combination of Rajput palace architecture and lake setting offered the Japanese printmaker a subject that resonated with his deep interest in the relationship between built structures and natural water.
