Tofuku Temple, more commonly known as Tofuku-ji, is one of Kyoto's great Zen temples, famous for its autumn foliage and its collection of medieval Zen buildings. Founded in 1236, the temple complex includes a massive sanmon gate, several subtemples, and a series of modern gardens designed by Shigemori Mirei. Ido Masao renders some aspect of this vast complex in the [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock format, capturing the architectural and natural elements that make Tofuku-ji one of Kyoto's most visually rewarding temple visits. The temple is particularly celebrated for the view from its Tsutenkyo bridge, where a valley filled with maple trees creates a sea of red in autumn and a canopy of green in summer. Ido's treatment likely focuses on the intersection of built structure and surrounding forest that defines the temple's character.
