True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Distant View of Sotosakurada
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
A distant view of Sotosakurada — the area outside the outer moat of the Imperial Palace compound — shows the open space and monumental scale of Meiji Tokyo's governmental center. The Sakurada Gate, site of the famous 1860 assassination of chief minister Ii Naosuke, had by Yasuji's time become part of the palace precinct, and the area around it was being transformed into the broad avenues and official buildings of a new capital. Yasuji's panoramic view conveys the spaciousness of this reimagined center of power.
