True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Koromogawa River Below Tenno-ji Temple
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Koromogawa River flows below Tenno-ji Temple in the Yanaka district, and Yasuji depicts this atmospheric combination of moving water and temple architecture in one of his more contemplative compositions. Tenno-ji was one of the large Yanaka temple complexes that survived the Meiji abolition of Buddhism relatively intact, its grounds providing a green and reflective space amid the densely built residential neighborhoods of the upper city. The river, small and quick, adds a quality of natural movement to the otherwise still architectural scene.
