True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Nakamise Shops, Asakusa
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Nakamise shopping arcade at Asakusa — the long approach avenue leading from the Kaminarimon thunder gate to the great Senso-ji temple — was the commercial heart of the city's most popular entertainment district. Yasuji depicts the Nakamise with its rows of small shops selling temple souvenirs, traditional sweets, and devotional goods, the arcade crowded with pilgrims and pleasure-seekers alike. The print captures one of the most recognizable urban scenes in all of Tokyo, a space that had changed little from its Edo origins even as the city transformed around it.
