True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Night View of Yanagibashi Bridge in the Rain
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
Yanagibashi Bridge in the rain at night — the crossing over the Kanda River near its Sumida confluence, in the famous entertainment district of the same name — is depicted here in one of Yasuji's most atmospherically complex compositions. Rain, night, and the reflections of lights on wet surfaces combine to create a layered nocturne of considerable subtlety. Yanagibashi was associated with the geisha culture of the Meiji period, the waterside restaurants and pleasure boats of the district visible through the falling rain, and the bridge itself becoming a stage for the romantic moods the location evoked.
