True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Okurabashi Bridge, Honjo
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
Okurabashi Bridge in the Honjo district spans one of the district's smaller canals, its modest wooden structure typical of the utilitarian river crossings that Yasuji documented throughout Tokyo's eastern lowlands. Honjo was among his most consistently explored territories, and his many bridge views of the district collectively constitute a systematic survey of a neighborhood that had changed little from its Edo patterns even as the Meiji city rebuilt itself around it. The bridge is shown with the same careful, unaffected attention Yasuji gave to all his subjects.
