True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Toshogu Shrine, Ueno
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The Toshogu Shrine at Ueno — the elaborate Edo-period mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate — is depicted here within the Ueno Park setting that surrounded it, its gold-lacquered architecture visible among the trees of the former Kanei-ji temple compound. The shrine's survival within the new Meiji public park made it an anomalous presence: a monument to the feudal lord whom the Meiji Restoration had displaced, preserved even as the political order he founded was being dismantled. Yasuji documents its physical splendor without apparent irony.
