True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: View from Asakusabashi Bridge at Sunset
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The view from Asakusabashi Bridge at sunset looks along the Kanda River toward its confluence with the Sumida, the dying light catching the water and the silhouettes of the bridge spans beyond. Asakusabashi was the last crossing of the Kanda River before it met the larger Sumida, and the view from this point encompassed both rivers and the district between them. Yasuji's sunset composition uses the evening light to give this ordinary urban waterway view a quality of natural beauty that transforms the documentary subject into something approaching lyrical landscape.
