Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
The clean, washed quality of light following summer rain is captured in this 1938 print—the sky cleared, the colors more vivid, the air freshened. Shinsui's treatment of "after rain" subjects explores what the Japanese call the distinctive atmospheric condition that follows precipitation, when the world seems temporarily renewed. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations move through the washed blues and greens of a post-rain sky, with the land below reflecting the sky's brightened clarity.
