by Ito Shinsui
Shinsui's extensive oeuvre spans bijin-ga, landscapes, and genre subjects. Auction averages over 12 months reflect healthy collector demand across all subject types.
The afterglow of sunset at Ukutsu—a location on the Sea of Japan coast—fills the sky with the warm orange and crimson tones that follow the sun's disappearance below the horizon. Produced in 1938, this seascape belongs to Shinsui's sustained engagement with the dramatic light effects of the Japanese coastline, particularly the western coast where sunsets over the open sea are unobstructed. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) printing creates the diffused transition between brilliant sky and darkening water.
