by Ito Shinsui
Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
A fresh sea breeze stirs the coastal landscape of this 1938 seascape, the dynamic quality of wind on water rendered through Shinsui's attention to the horizontal movement of waves and the way the sky responds to wind with broken cloud patterns. The sea breeze subject belongs to his late-1930s coastal series and demonstrates his interest in capturing specific atmospheric conditions rather than simply picturesque topography. The combination of wind and sea gave him both formal dynamism and seasonal specificity.
