$500–$5,000. Common landscapes: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Ito Takashi's prints published by Doi Hangaten are the most sought after. Night scenes and snow views command premiums.
The Oirase Stream in Aomori Prefecture, one of Japan's most celebrated mountain waterways, is shown in its spring aspect in this oban woodblock print. Ito Takashi renders the stream's rushing water over mossy rocks beneath a canopy of fresh green foliage, using the woodblock medium's layered color passes to distinguish between the translucent movement of water and the solid permanence of stone. Spring along the Oirase brings a particular quality of light as new leaves filter sunlight into dappled patterns on the water's surface. The stream flows from Lake Towada through a forested gorge studded with waterfalls, offering Ito a subject rich in textural contrast: smooth water, rough rock, delicate leaves, and heavy tree trunks all compressed into the oban format. The vertical energy of falling and rushing water gives this print a dynamism that contrasts with Ito's calmer lake and mountain views.
