$1,500–$6,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Rome's contemplative abstract prints bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics. Limited editions hold value.
Morning light falls on fresh snow in this oban mokuhanga, the early hour lending a cool blue cast to shadows while the snow's surface catches the first warmth of the rising sun. Joshua Rome uses water-based pigments on washi paper to render this specific moment in the winter day, when the world appears freshly made under its overnight accumulation. The mokuhanga printing process builds the morning light through transparent color layers, with warm tones printed over cooler ones to create the optical mixture of dawn. Snow subjects have a long history in Japanese printmaking, from Hiroshige's Kambara to Hasui's temple snowscapes, and Rome works within this tradition while bringing his own semi-abstract sensibility to the material. The morning setting adds a temporal dimension, anchoring the snowscape in a particular hour rather than a generalized winter condition.
