Bungaro the Puppeteer

The Bunraku puppeteer Yoshida Bungoro appears here in his working identity — not on stage but in the transitional space behind it, where the craft of manipulation is visible. Sekino was fascinated by Bungoro throughout the late 1940s and into the 1950s, producing multiple prints of the master in both performance and preparation. This view of the puppeteer captures the intelligence and concentration that the art demands.
