A single-word title that takes its meaning from the French musical term for a short practice piece — a study or exercise — suggesting a print that operates as a formal investigation rather than a narrative or subject-driven work. Sekino's "etude" prints use woodblock as a medium for working through compositional problems (the distribution of color masses, the balance of positive and negative space) in much the way a musician uses a technical exercise to develop fluency.
