Description
The post-town of Fuchu, with the Abe River as its defining geographic feature, appears in this Tokaido station print. The Abe River — broad, prone to flooding, and historically problematic for travelers — required either a ford or a ferry crossing, and the wait for crossing conditions, or the ford itself, gave the station a particular drama in travel accounts. Sekino's river composition likely emphasizes the water's movement and scale relative to human figures.
