The station of Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture appears through its defining landmark: the hilltop Kannon statue that looks out over the town and surrounding countryside from a mountain temple. The Kannon (Guanyin), the bodhisattva of compassion, provided one of the Tokaido's most recognizable silhouettes — a figure visible from the road below, her elevated position suggesting both protection and surveillance of travelers.
