Description
This print depicts Sanjō Ōhashi, one of the great historic bridges spanning the Kamo River in central Kyoto, shown under snow — a compositional device that reduces the scene to essentials of form and tone. Snow scenes in woodblock printing traditionally exploit the unprinted washi surface to represent accumulated snow, with subtle bokashi graduating the sky from grey to white above the bridge's silhouette. The wooden piling structure of the bridge reflected on the dark Kamo River provides strong vertical rhythms, while the horizontal span and snow-muffled shoreline establish the broader spatial framework. Sekino's sosaku-hanga sensibility would bring expressive carving to the bare winter trees along the riverbank and confident color choices to the few figures or architectural elements that punctuate the otherwise monochromatic scene. Sanjō Bridge's historical importance as a terminus of the Tōkaidō road deepens the subject's resonance.
