Description
The station of Mitsuke on the Tenryu River in Shizuoka appears in this undated Tokaido print, one of multiple Sekino treatments of a station that was defined by its role as a river-crossing point. The Tenryu — one of the most powerful rivers on the Tokaido route — made Mitsuke a place of enforced waiting when the river ran too high for the ferry, the delay creating a compressed social world of stranded travelers.
