Description
The stone embankment along the Tenryu River at Mitsuke — the engineered infrastructure that controlled the river's flooding and protected the settlement from its annual inundations — appears here as both landscape subject and emblem of the constant negotiation between human settlement and natural force. Sekino's interest in the built landscape of the Tokaido route extends to the less glamorous infrastructure of embankments, fords, and bridges that made travel possible.
