Description
The station of Odawara, the castle-town at the foot of the Hakone mountains, appears in this undated print as one of the Tokaido's most historically freighted stops. Odawara's castle was the seat of the Hojo clan whose 1590 defeat by Toyotomi Hideyoshi effectively ended the Sengoku period, and its post-town prosperity reflected centuries of strategic importance at the gateway to the Hakone crossing.
