Roof of Kyoto presents the ancient capital from above, turning its traditional roofscape into a rhythmic pattern of tiles and angles. Sekino designed and printed this entire edition personally. Typical market prices fall between $250-$800.
The rooftop skyline of Kyoto — the curved eaves of machiya townhouses, the occasional pagoda pinnacle, the tiled roofs in their serried ranks — provides Sekino with a subject that is both architectural study and urban landscape. The roofscape view is characteristically Japanese as a compositional device, avoiding the panoramic in favor of the accumulated detail of a densely built city seen from just above its own level.
