The station of Sakanoshita in Mie Prefecture, set in the Suzuka Mountains at one of the Tokaido's highest points, appears here at dawn when the morning's first light strikes the mountaintops before descending to the valley. The mountain-top morning was one of the Tokaido's most celebrated visual experiences for early travelers on the road, the light changing rapidly through the colors Sekino's color woodblock can render with particular atmospheric fidelity.
