Description
Otsu, at the southern end of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, was the final station of the Tokaido before Kyoto, and the lake — Japan's largest — provided a distinctive panoramic setting unlike any other on the route. A clear day following snowfall offers specific atmospheric conditions: the white ground plane, the hard-edged shadows cast by low winter sun, and the luminous contrast between the snow-covered landscape and the dark water of the lake. Sekino likely rendered the snow with the washi ground itself serving as the white — leaving areas unprinted rather than adding white pigment — a traditional and technically demanding approach that requires the entire composition to be planned in negative space. Bokashi gradations in the sky, moving from pale gold at the horizon to deeper blue above, would establish the quality of winter clarity. The print sits within the meisho-e tradition of depicting Otsu and Lake Biwa while bringing the seasonal specificity and atmospheric precision characteristic of Sekino's mature landscape work.
