Description
This print depicts a performer—likely associated with the Yoshida family of bunraku puppet masters or a kabuki theater family—in the gakuya (green room), the backstage space where performers prepare, rest between scenes, or receive visitors. Sekino produced numerous theater-related prints documenting both formal stage performance and the informal private moments before curtain, and the backstage subject allows for an intimacy unavailable in prints of staged performance. The performer would be depicted in full or partial makeup and costume, the elaborate formal dress creating rich pattern detail, while the relaxed backstage context introduces the psychological informality that distinguishes Sekino's theater prints from conventional yakusha-e. The artist's proof designation indicates this impression was pulled before the commercial edition, typically showing slightly denser ink or richer color saturation than the numbered prints. Such proofs were retained by the artist as reference and often show the composition at its most immediate.
