Description

In this treatment of the Maruyama Park yozakura subject, Yoshikawa works within a compositional tradition with deep roots in Japanese visual culture while bringing the technical refinement of the shin-hanga era to bear on a Kyoto scene of personal and cultural significance. The weeping cherry — whose form differs dramatically from the upright cherry varieties of eastern Japan — demands a distinct compositional approach, with its cascading branches creating a downward movement that anchors the composition differently than the cloud-like masses of Yoshino or Ueno cherry imagery. The print exploits the drama of the night setting: lantern-lit blossoms rendered in white, cream, and pale pink against ground passages mixed from indigo and other dark pigments, with the baren-worked washi maintaining the even tonal surfaces essential to the scene's atmospheric unity. The image participates in the broader category of Kyoto meisho-e that Yoshikawa developed throughout his career.
