Description
The third limited edition Fan print extends Kawano's exploration of this compositional theme with what is likely a distinct chromatic or tonal variation. Across multiple impressions of the same subject, Kawano could change the perceived mood and weight of a composition substantially through color substitution alone, replacing a cool palette with warm ochres and reds or introducing a contrasting ground color. The fan motif connects his postwar work to a long tradition of accessories as compositional tools in Japanese figurative prints, though his bold carving style gives these elements a graphic immediacy absent from the more delicate Meiji and Taisho precedents. The limited edition designation suggests these were produced with collector presentation in mind, likely signed and numbered by hand.
