$500–$4,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Kawano's early death at 49 limits her output. Her dreamlike figure prints are most sought after.
The oban-format Night Perfume (Ume, plum) gives Kawano's flowering plum at night subject its fullest treatment. The larger sheet allows the branches to extend across the composition with greater sweep, the pale blossoms set against deep shadow with a contrast that makes each flower glow. This version of the composition demonstrates how Kawano adapted his subjects to different format conventions, each size revealing different qualities in the same essential image.
