Description
This [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) subject depicts a young woman in an attitude of prayer, hands clasped or raised, head inclined. The devotional pose introduced a quiet spiritual dimension less common in Kawano's dancer series but consistent with broader [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) interest in intimate, contemplative moments. His characteristic bold outlines define the figure's silhouette, while kimono patterning, if present, would be rendered through careful registration of multiple color blocks. The bowed head and closed or downcast eyes invite the viewer into a private interior moment rather than the performative display of the dancing figure compositions. Kawano likely printed on [washi](/glossary/washi) with hand-applied pressure using a [baren](/glossary/baren), achieving the soft color saturation characteristic of his postwar output.
