Description

Window No. 1 renders a small latticed window on a mustard-gold ground, its wooden grid crossed by dark diagonal bindings, set beside a row of vertical bamboo-like poles against black. Below, the composition divides into rectangular fields of gold and deep red woodgrain, with irregular gold-leaf clouds massed along the upper edge and a scatter of gold fragments in the lower left corner. Katsunori Hamanishi's 2006 mezzotint uses the gold leaf's reflective, uneven texture against the mezzotint's velvety black and red passages, producing a flat, geometric composition of architectural fragments.
