This is a second impression of the Ejiri in Suruga Province design from "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," depicting the famous wind-blown scene near the coastal road at Ejiri (present-day Shimizu, Shizuoka). Travelers have lost papers, a hat, and a section of cloth to a sudden gust; willows along the road bend to the right; Fuji holds its form, unmoved, in the middle distance. Print runs in Hokusai's era were variable, and successive impressions often show differences in ink density, color saturation, and the condition of carved blocks. This later impression may exhibit reduced contrast in the sky or water areas, or variation in the application of the key-block ink relative to the earlier state. Comparison of the two impressions documents how a single design was interpreted differently across its production life, reflecting the commercial realities of the popular print trade.
